While searching for a New Year’s message I thought of the following issues some of which were prominent themes in the past year: morality, ethics, race relations, gender. Without a doubt, these are very pressing concerns and are very much worthy of attention. Nevertheless, surpassing all of these issues is the need for God’s people to devote themselves to prayer. Indeed, Scripture, as well as history, is replete with instances of God averting His judgment, restoring the fortunes of nations and reviving His people – all in response to earnest, heartfelt prayer. We find in 2 Chron. 7:13-14 God assuring ancient Israel,
‘When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land’
This New Year’s message is divided into two parts: the first is devoted to prayer and the second is devoted to expressions of appreciation to all who served, financially supported, prayed for and benefited from the ministry. With that said, I invite your participation in the following prayer –
“O God, we acknowledge your power in creation as seen particularly in Your ordering of time. We would pray now and ask that you would build our TRUST in You and Your Word and that we might have the knowledge and wisdom to recognize the new year as Your gift and to live each day according to Your will. O God, our God, increase our Faith in and our knowledge of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who died, rose from the dead and is now sitting at Your right hand. We pray that by faith we would glorify Him in our hearts as Lord, High Priest, and King. We pray for Your strength, O God, the strength to carry out Your will. We understand that each new day You have given to us is for Your will and glory. We also pray that our lives would manifest the fruits of the Spirit and that we might daily surrender to Your call to discipleship. We pray that Your Spirit will guide us in all truth, granting us discernment enabling us to grow in grace. We pray our God that You would hear us in the name of Jesus Your Son, Amen”.
